Bio: Loud, crude, outlandish and funny it is the “Mouth of the South” contest. The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Laff Co. bring back the laughs with a vengeance as they present the second installment of the popular comedy contest. The contest provides new and emerging improv and stand up comics the chance to battle it out one liner to one liner for the title of Mouth of the South. The contest and laughs return May 5, 2011 to The Powerhouse Community Arts Center in Oxford, MS. Laff Co. launched the contest to showcase the best improvisation and stand up comedy the South had to offer. “The south has a rich history of storytellers and fibbers,” said Bruce Butler, Director of Laff Co., “from a crazy Uncle Dwight to that guy who would do anything for $1, the South breeds outstanding comics. Oxford is a natural central place to gather and see who can take home the prize.” Now it its second incarnation the contest has attracted comedians from eight different states for the previous contest. “It seems time to crown a new Mouth” added Butler. Comedians must submit short video to the contests facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=172955562755563, to enter the contest. Fans of the contest and comedians will be able to vote for their favorite comedian with a simple click of the “like” button. Contests will be selected based on feedback from fans and by a panel of professionals. Submission will be accepted beginning March 24th with final votes be cast on 15th. The Mouth of the South contest will be held at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center in Oxford on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 8:00pm. The contest will be judged by three pre-selected judges on quality of performance, creativity, and the crowd’s response that will be measure with the Laff Co’s Laff-O-Meter 5000. The winner will receive a $250 cash prize and the chance to make an appearance at another venue. The audience will receive hours of laughs which only get funnies if they visit the cash bar for the cost of $10.
